The required pre-requisite courses are designed to help the students gain the knowledge needed in order to pass the ATI TEAS, the LPN Entrance Exam which determines the students' readiness for the LPN Core Program. Students have the option to submit transcripts for review had they taken the classes elsewhere. They may also take proficiency exams for non-transferable courses. Please note: Americare Institute accepts credits from accredited schools only.

The Pre-Requisite Program here in Americare is approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), an agency which grants the operation of private institutions in Illinois.



BIOLOGY 100: Medical Terminology
This course is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots and abbreviations. By relating terms to the body systems, students identify proper use of words in a medical environment.

Any Medical Terminology course


COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS 100: Computer Fundamentals
This course introduces students to computer concepts including hardware, application software, operating systems and the internet. Students will gain hands-on experience in basic troubleshooting, maintenance and upgrading their own personal computers. They will also achieve proficiency in using popular office applications as well as the internet for research and work-related assignments.

Any Computer Information Systems course


ENGLISH 102: Effective Business Writing
This course primarily teaches students how to write effectively in a corporate setting. Students will learn how to proof and revise writing, write business letters with proper formatting, and recognize formal and informal language.

Transfer Equivalent:
English Composition 101-102


MATH 202: Mathematics for Nurses
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive background of mathematical applications in the field of Nursing. Students will acquire and develop mathematical skills commonly applied in the care and treatment of patients.

Transfer Equivalent:
Math for Healthcare Professions, College-Level Algebra, Basic Pharmacology


PSYCHOLOGY 200: Psychology for Nurses
This course provides an introduction to basic knowledge of psychological behavioral patterns to assist the practical nurse in meeting the emotional needs of the client. It discusses the meaning and development of self-concept over the lifespan. It aims to provide the student with an understanding of acute and chronic mental illnesses in order to promote safe, therapeutic and effective care of people.
